What
Salvatore Di Vita, a successful film director, now lives in Rome, although he was born and brought up in Sicily, in a town he has not seen in thirty years. One evening he receives a telephone call from his mother, informing him of the death of his friend Alfredo. He decides to go home for the funeral; however, as soon as he steps on home soil, memories of his childhood come flooding back, taking him back to the 40s when, as a little boy, his love for the cinema was interwoven with the everyday history of the town's only cinema, the Cinema Paradiso, where his dear friend Alfredo worked as projectionist. During a long flashback scene, we witness the blossoming relationship between Salvatore (nicknamed Totò) and Alfredo, who practically adopts him as his own, taking Totò with him every day to watch him in the projection room. One evening, a reel of film bursts into flame and a fire breaks out, blinding Alfredo and destroying the cinema. Some time goes by and a townsperson who has won a large sum of money on the football pools has the cinema rebuilt, renaming it Nuovo Cinema Paradiso. Totò becomes the projectionist, until one day he leaves the town, bent on pursuing a career as film director. Cutting back to the present day, Salvatore realises that for too long he has put aside his memories of Alfredo who, before dying, made him a special present by which to remember him forever.
