Premium food rates at not so premium food

On a working day, one of my trips to Pantaloons at Inorbit for a garment exchange saw me heading to News Cafe for lunch.

The place is located behind DIl Panjabi and opposite the Pune store ( or rather behind it ).

It has about 2 tables with what i can recollect only 1 sofa seating close to the door.

The bar area is huge and i think the far end of the restaurant is where the DJ is located.

On a workday, they have happy hours from 12-8 , but only on alcohol which i am sure they know not a lot of folks indulge in, which is cheap tactics.

They are basically a bar that serves food. Their bar menu is pretty long and i did not bother going through it.

Their food menu is also a long list but very premium priced is what i noticed.

I did not want to try a lot of things thanks to the price so i settled on the California chicken burger ( which promised, grilled chicken breast, guacamole, salsa and cheese ).

It took the burger a good 25 mins to arrive, by the time i was planning to getup and leave the place.

It comes with a side of coleslaw , fries, pickled onion, gherkin, and green olives. The pickled stuff is basically tiffy's produce available in any upmarket food store.

The coleslaw was good, thankfully well balanced and not an overdose of raw cabbage.

THe burger buns were nice and steamed. The patty was also of decent portions, not too oily, not negligible in size.

The entire patty lasted , may be till 3 bites to finishing the burger.

The toppings were guacamole and salsa. I dint know salsa meant a slice of tomato - did not taste onion or cilantro either, but guacamole is what i was happy with. It was obviously processed but the quantity was very good. Evenly thick, and evenly spread across the burger.

The burger was not a wow dish, but it will definitely satiate your hunger pangs. It isn't exactly VFM ( look at the bill ) but then once in a while it is okay to indulge.

Will i be going back again any time soon - may be not, but i think i know where to go if i have to eat a decently filling burger

Newscafe : Drinks food and lovely evenings

Newscafe is a nice place to catch up with friends over a couple of drinks over the weekend or after working hours,It has a lovely view of the secret lake/durgam cheruvu from its balcony even though its a bit heavy on the pocket it sure is worth the experience my list of must have bites and wood fired pizzas is as follows

California Ice Tea - five white spirits topped with ice & cranberry juice (not for the faint hearted)
Bull frog - five white spirits topped with ice & redbull

Starters -
Ginger Chicken Strips - KFC type spicy chicken served with 2 dips
Chicken Satay - Grilled marinated chicken with hot chilli and peanut dip
spicy asian chicken- smoky hot chicken in chinese sauce

Main Course/Pizza's -
Sweet Chilli Chicken Pizza - lovely fusion of sweet, sour and spice its a 12" so one pizza can serve 2 people

Mediterranean Veg - Tomatoes/Bell Peppers/Mushrooms/Olives/Zucchini and cherry tomatoes in a Pomodori tomato sauce base

Lemon Cheese cake - out of the world flavor
Caramel Praline Cheese Cake - another exotic delight

Do drop a line if you like my review or tried any of the above dishes.

Loved It

My friend took me to this place on my last visit to Hyderabad. A pub in a mall is an alien concept for a guy like me from Chennai. This had out door seating as well and is perfect for a drinking session before a movie. The drinks are expensive but we decided to stick to pitchers. We ordered for a pizza and have to say it took ages to arrive. Also the service is pretty poor as well, but it is understandable considering the crowd and various seating options. The interiors were crowded and the DJ kept playing loud music. The place is worth a visit though.

Nice place very badly managed!!!

The place may be good for walk in lunch or dinner but our experienced when we booked the place for the evening was real bad.

Few negatives that don't require any close observation...
- Very few items on the menu.
- Very low volume for music and very poor DJ.... song selection, mixing, everything was bad.
You cannot call this place a disc at all.
- ACs stopped working and even those who were not dancing were sweating.

May be, the management will learn with time.... but our experience was real bad.

Price: You can buy a gunny full beers with the cost of the beer bucket.

Ambience: is too good.

pathetic stale sickening food

having been here a year ago, last time i ordered the lasagna and the meat was stalen tasteless and i never ever came back to this place again .

yesterday met some firang friends at inorbit and they were waiting for me inside newscafe . i was very apprehensive to enter n order food, but then thot its been a year since i have eaten here and thot maybe the food has improved... little did i know how sick i was gonna get eating here ...

ordered spanish pizza, chicken pepper fry, french fries and pasta ....banana and honey shake

none were tasty escept for the shakes and it was just frozen meat thawed and reheated and served to us. food taste was yuck and it was a hefty bill of 4000 for the 5 of us

after a few hours ,started feeling nauseating and started vomitting, felt terrible and felt very sick , my friends who had eaten with me reached home and all have fallen sick, some vomitting profusely or hitting the loo

its like the saying i should have known better than to come back to this pretentious place where the food is all but fresh ....

now all of us have been diagnosed as having food poisoning, taking time off work and sitting at home puking whatever we injest n sipping electrol....

a fervent request to fellow burpers and hydbadis. AVOID THIS PLACE

Excellent place but heavily priced

My wife had to go to Opium Spa (Inorbit Mall) this Sunday, and I dutyfully dropped her. I was informed that she would spend 1:15-1:30 hour there, so what should I do? I planned to visit News Cafe for some beer.

I had been to Inorbit Mall multiple times, but this is my first visit to this joint and it looks,.. ummm.. "inviting". The decor is refreshing, colours are bright and gives a huge lift to the mood. The seating area at L2 is too good as you can see the Durgam Cheruvu Lake from there.

The waiters are smart, prompt and happy to help you (I have rarely seen smiling waiters in Hyderabad joints). I was seated promptly, order was taken immediately and I was also given a newspaper to read (to prove their name, uh?).

Since it was a time-pass event, I ordered only one dish as snacks-- Asian Spicy Chicken-- which was spicy and really good. The portion was huge and more than enough for 2 persons. The portion must have been 1.5 times of any standard portion in a good Chinese restaurant. I had to call my wife to finish it off!!!

I have only two points to share:
1. The prices written for liquors- the measure/quantity is not mentioned. I was surprised to see the bill. The menucard read Beer as Rs 195. I later learnt that it is the price of pint beer (not the regular 750 ml bottle)-- whose MRP is 42 Rs. Top up that 195 Rs with servide tax and VAT-- and the beer costs amost 5 times of its MRP. It's very highly priced. (For a starter and 5 pint beers, the bill was Rs 1600)

2. The TV was running-- but picture quality was too bad (I don't know why the don't use Tata Sky or Airtel-- the picture was extremely shaky like they were using those pre-historic antennas). I don't go to a restaurant to watch TV, but still, that day India was playing and I would be happy to see the match.

My ratings:

Ambience (Weightage: 10%): 4.5/5
Service: (Weightage: 30%): 4.5/5
Food (Weightage: 30%): 4.5/5
Value for money (Weightage: 30%): 1/5
Overall: 3.45/5

Appearances can be deceptive!

I had my birthday party here! the place looks amazing.. the color combinations used are awesome. Once bound to be impressed with the place at the first walkin! BUT, appearances can be deceptive and this place proves the point. THE FOOD SUCKS HERE!!!!
the veg soup was passable but the chicken soup was almost disgusting. Not to mention the bland noodles and other dishes we had.
The other day my boyfriend took me there for an evening coffee, and My oh My! was the place a price! I'd rather suggest other places for parties or dates, but if your tired after hours of shopping with the girls, you know where to drop in for a quick bite!

Birthday Celebrations @ News Cafe

I recently been to News Cafe with some friends to celebrate my birthday. To our surprise News Cafe offers a discount upto 35% who celebrate their birthday at News Cafe.

We were given the warmest welcome from the moment we arrived, the manager and the rest of the staff were helpful and refreshingly attentive.

The place wasn't too busy at that time so we chose the tables with high stools on the bar counter. We had few cocktails which were really superb. They also have a good selection of Mocktails for those who wants non alcoholics drinks. We enjoyed our dinner too,it was very delicious.

The interior is very chic and elegant, modern and the view is amazing facing the lake.

We really enjoyed our evening at News Cafe and we highly recommend it!

Awesome !!! The only authentic cocktail bar in Hyd

I never had an inclination to write a food/drink review in India.
But my experience in News Cafe has changed it all !!

My friends from England were here on work and we wanted to go to a new place......and since I saw some great articles about News Cafe.....I mustered the courage to tell them about the place and what I read about it.

The English already knew about the brand as it is supposed to an international brand from South Africa and they had gone to almost 5-6 News Cafe's in Africa.

So we went to News Cafe in Inorbit Mall and boy, was it good......I never thought Hyd had such an awesome place with precise interiors and then the view.......if you keep aside the fact that you are in India, this place seems like an exotic european setting with the view of the soothing lake and hills !!

Coming to the drinks and food , their liquor and food menu is extensive and we ordered different drinks ...... the cocktails were just amazing.......never had such awesome cocktails in Hyderabad before........

The food as well is just great with huge portions.......we tried out the Steak, Pork Ribs and other meats and we really liked it........

The desserts and ice creams were also very good.

On the whole, a very great and awesome experience.
I live in Secbad and I request the owners to open a place in secbad as well :)

Hyderabad has truly got its international cocktail bar/restaurant !!

Great ambiance, Horrible service!!

We sat here for about two hours, but the place got duller and duller. There seemed to be absolutely no life at the place. All four of us were starring at each others faces for most of the while. The prices of the food and liquor were exorbitant, and the food dint taste amazing either. The quantity of food served was also quite less. Added to this, the server was quite rude. He wanted us to move to a table for 3 in between, as we were having only food and hookah (he actually said that!!). On the whole, I was very very disappointed. I was hoping for a better end to a long day, and it was absolutely thwarted!!

nice place for chillout

I have been to this place last night. The waiter was very courteous. Grabbed some buckets of beer and chilled out in the open air seeing India's bowling.

Good night view of the lake and nice place to hangout after work. Though the bill was a bit heavy - overall experience was good.

pathetic service

it seems like a trend now...change like crazy, add components like service charge to further harass the customer, push all taxes like service tax to him, and then, when you've made him pay through his nose, give him such a bad service that he regrets ever stepping into the restaurant. i mean, why can't people who charge such high prices AT LEAST train their staff??? is that not what somebody comes to these ultra expensive places for - to relax and enjoy? and then we have to deal with completely ill-mannered staff which we could easily have encountered at a "cheap" place like dhaba or something, and at least got good food in return.

btw, i have given 2 stars instead of 1 only because the drinks in the place were decent.

News Cafe Experience

I was at News Cafe, Hyderabad last Friday and to my surprise this place is lot better than New Delhi.....it’s spacious and very good interiors. I freaked out when I entered their outdoor seating area it was truly European!!!!! I love their cocktails and food.....they are really good with their burgers, pizzas and appetizers and not to forget their cocktails they are just amazing....I initially felt it little expensive but when I saw the portion size I immediately called for a take away bag ;) food pricing and cocktail pricing what they have is a good value for money.
News Cafe rocks!!!! See you soon News Cafe team ;)

Not Newsworthy.

A quick, brief review, this place doesn't merit anything more.
Went few Fridays ago, was greeted at the hostess desk outside by an attractive, expat bartender who showed us to our seats (nice way to draw in the crowds management!). Slick looking restaurant, reminded me of The Park, Delhi. The balcony seating area overlooking the lake was packed, the crowd inside was sizeable too and consisted of young professionals and upmarket, noveaux riche types.

The menu is extensive, prices are unjustifiably bloated - and this is in comparison to similar premium joints like F Cafe and Hard Rock Cafe.

Here's what I ordered :

1) Tomato Soup - Very strange. It was like eating big spoonfuls of tomato concasse and rough mirepoix of vegetables suspended in thin stock. It was overpoweringly sour until that was interrupted by a big bunch of basil and then more sourness. It was accompanied by a couple of slices of garlic bread which made the soup a bit more palatable. It was like eating a bruschetta really.

2) Tenderloin Steak, mashed potatoes, sauce, sauted veggies - I'm going to write exactly what I wrote in the comment card - The smallest steak I've ever eaten in my life, the award for stinginess goes to News Cafe. I'm not sure where their chefs are from but that was NOT a flippin tenderloin steak. What it really was and looked like is a very tough piece of brownish meat, shaped vaguely like a 3" meat chop (or maybe a turd). Stringy and tough (almost as if it had been deep fried) on the outside and chewy and a little softer towards the centre. I finished it in 4-5 forkfuls, I kid you not. The imposter steak was aranged on a round of mashed potatoes(pretty good, creamy and not over seasoned) and about 7 and a half slivers of beans, carrots and Zucchini. NOT 7 and a half slivers EACH. There may have been a tablespoon of sauce somewhere in there but I couldn't really tell. I think I paid over 500 bucks for something that is infintely inferior to the steaks at F Cafe (which is superb) and HRC (good). It doesn't help matters that their steaks are less expensive too.

3)My friend ordered the "Burger Trio" - 3 mini burgers, one each of lamb, chicken and beef served with fries and maybe some coleslaw. He liked them, I thought they were moderately good and cursed myself when I saw that the patties on his burgers were about the same size as my steak.

Service was sluggish and they committed the cardinal sin of bringing in the main courses at different times. I'd almost finished my ginormous steak by the time the burgers arrived. Also, why all the lights around us were switched off when some of the other tables left is beyond me.
We decided to skip dessert and I ended up paying close to 1500 bucks for a rather unsatifying meal. Moral of the story, if you're charging me good money for a meal then you damn well serve something worthwhile on my plate else I'm not coming back and I'm telling as many people as I can about your malpractices. How's that for some NEWS ?

Avoid - if you want to eat good food

I logged in after a couple of years or thereabouts only to tell eveyone out here what a terrible place this is. Stay away!
I had a minestrone - and it was t.e.r..r.i.b.l.e. It had just onions, and some chunky pieces of tomato and... wait for it... a film of stale oil on top.
And then a thai green curry - which had overcooked vegetables, mushrooms despite me requesting them not to have them, the rice was stale and hard. I understand restaurants need to manage process and do tend to heat cold food, but this was awful. The veggies were somewhat burnt, there was veggies that were overcooked to the extent I couldn't get my fork in.
And to top it all - pretty expensive! Rs. 500 for this terrible food. My recommend - AVOID!
Oh, and pretty sad service too.

Average steaks, sub-avg service, expensive

Went to this place 3-4 times. Its best to go for brunch. Not enough waiters to handle evening rush. I had good service when I was the only customer :-). This is at odd hours 11:00 am or 3:30 pm.
Great continental breakfast. Agree that view is good
Steaks are tough - did not enjoy then the 2 times I had them. Indijoe steaks are waaaay better.

Pretty expensive - this coming from someone who used to go to Indijoe every weekend. Portions are small. I live in Gachibowli and would still prefer to go to Indijoe or Grill room for steaks/continental food.
