Cognitive dissonance

The quality of the food and drinks was abysmal, in stark contrast with the awesome space and ambience.

Well, I guess all aspects of the QBA experience are meant to be a flip-flop contrast at every stage from the word go - first, when you try to locate the place from the road (CP Inner Circle), its barely visible behind the trees. Then, you come closer to the building block, after parking, and see the very colorful and vibrant looking "QBA" (its not "Cuba", as I thought when my friend first mentioned it)...then you start to search for the entrance...which, to your surprise, is way out to the rear of the block. You start walking in the dingy looking, narrow alleyway, almost tempted to turn back. But suddenly you see well uniformed, pro-looking people at the reception dias on the ground floor, and that helps remove the initial hesitation. The ride up the elevator, cranky and colorful at the same time, is quick.

You thought an Americano was a strong, large, black cup of coffee? Its also a gin based drink on the QBA menu. But make sure you check the brand of gin they put in, and whether it is one to your taste. Because, of course, gin can vary widely in taste, depending on the brand. The one they put in the Americano was uncomfortably bitter, even for one who finds feni pleasant, and can have Bacardi Rum on the rocks! ;-)

TIP OF THE DAY: If you order the "Golden Basket " for starters, you'll probably realize that the basket itself is edible!! Its nothing but a poppodum "moulded" into a bowl shape.

Nice ambiance

We were moving around CP area couple of weeks back and the Delhi heat had good of us. We decided to have a beer somewhere and to avoid the afternoon sun.

The impression at the entrance was very bad, it looked very shady, however once we entered the main restaurant the perception changed. The first thing that surprised me was the sheer space available there. With the rates that are prevalent for real estate in CP area, one wouldn't take a long time to make out that this place would be very expensive.

Anyhow we settled it, and the only thing we wanted was a beer, but they didn't have regular Indian Beers, and when we ordered the drought beer, we were presented with a can of Kingfisher drought. Cranberry juice which was listed under the fresh juice category, had no fresh feel to it and felt like some concentrate and water mixture.

Anyhow won't rate the place too low, as I have not yet eaten anything there, and was there in the afternoon, so might go there one of these days in the evening and then would be able to post a proper review. However regardless of the blemishes the place had a great feel to it, I could have easily imagined what would be the environment like in the evening hours.

PS : For two Drought beers (500 Ml each) and a Cranberry juice the damage was more than Rs.500.

The bar seemed to be very well stocked, have uploaded a picture of the same.

Soak in the surreal ambience

I agree completely with the review titled 'Inner Circle Jewel.' Just thought I'd add my experience to it.

The first time I went here, I had the whole of Sunday to kill with a couple of friends before taking the flight back to Chennai. It was winter time and so we took a table on the upper deck and enjoyed the early afternoon sun with a picturesque view of the Inner Circle at Connaught Place. Later, we took a table inside. There was some great live acoustic music on the podium just above the Q-shaped bar. Sunlight came in through the violet wraps and gave the place a surreal feel.

The next 3 times that I have been here has been during the evenings and I have taken seats on the lower storey - once at the bar stool and a couple of times on the large sofas. The lights keep changing colours gradually and you can see the place in different hues. Also, have spotted a tarot card reader on a couple of occasions. She pays a visit to all tables. There was something interesting happening on all occasions. Also there were some great gigs advertised at QBA but I never got to attend them.

Be sure to visit QBA with good friends who have a whole day to spare and soak in the ambience.

Inner Circle Jewel

Few things define New Delhi better than CP's Inner Circle. With the gleaming new Central Park, the impossible parking, and one of the few walkable plazas in the capital, a restaurant boasting a superb view of all this action seems like a no-brainer. However, I'm sure many Delhiwallahs would agree that while many places in CP do make an effort, there's really no establishment that offers a killer view of the circle, something that should be any Inner Circle joint's USP.

Q'BA, in my opinion, should change all that. This is a super-sophisticated lounge, built around a quirky Q-shaped bar (hence the name). The crowd is diverse, as with most New Delhi places, and ranges from wide-eyed tourists to harried professionals to smooth-talking diplomats to students with money to burn. It's only fitting, then, that CP's Inner Circle becomes part of the decor, one with the ambience of the place.

There's an alchemical synergy at play here. Get a table on the upper deck, and you get a great insight into the surreal spectacle that is Inner Circle by night. The drinks are all great, I'm sure. The food must also have been good, right? To be honest, I can't remember, because I've been enchanted by the ambience of the place since I walked in. Dim lighting, hushed service, fluid music, subtle digital flashes of light here and there. Down a couple of beers, and it's twice as good! It's pricey, but if you've chosen to come drinking in CP, chances are you can afford it.

So if you want a sophisticated, atmospheric night out in the capital, but don't want to make the journey all the way down to the Qutab area, Q'Ba will not disappoint. Until DV8 is done with renovation, this is probably the swishest lounge in CP.
