Good food at a great address!

And when I say 'good', i mean just that. Good! Not average..not great!

My colleague had told me a couple of months back that Zen is a very expensive restaurant with excellent chinese food! So, I decided to try out the place to celebrate my wife's pay hike :p

sigh! My colleague was definitely right on the cost front. I wish he was correct on the food part too!

The ambience was good, although the tables were placed way too closely for my comfort. The waiters were not all that courteous ... politeness is something which I have begun to expect out of top restaurant waiters. The waiters in Zen bang the plates down on your table with an audible sound..once is a mistake ..again and again can only be an unattractive habit..or worse still, a bad attitude!

Coming to the food..we are vegetarians and tried the lemon coriander soup and vegetable manchurian for starters. We ordered egg fried rice with zen special vegetables for the main course.

The food comes in good portions and is presented well in pleasing china. But I am afraid I have to say I have eaten better chinese food. I have been to Mainland china and Bamboo shoots in Bangalore which serve excellent chinese food. Zen does a decent fare but not something that I would look forward to going back to again and again.

To cap it all, the waiter serving us actually asked for a tip explicitly. After charging 10% service charge!

You may wonder why I gave a rating of 'average' after saying that the food is good. Well, bad service took some points away. Also, when we were given our table, there were a few crumbs of food left lying there by the previous guests which the not so adept waiters missed to clean out.

For those who are planning to go eat at this restaurant, do go by all means! the restaurant is recommended. But dont go there with too many expectations.

Great Fish Dish!

My husband and I recently visited Zen for an evening meal. Yes, the menu looked expensive and we were tempted to leave, however it was so hot outside and nice and cool inside, we decided to share 2 choices and drink their filtered water. It was an airy place, and everything spotlessly clean - interesting decor.
I wanted fish with almonds and cashew nuts plus a ginger vegetable mixture but the table attendant said both these dishes had a lot of sauce and since neither of us wanted rice he suggested a drier fish dish plus the broccoli and beans/peas veg - both without sauces since we didn't want any rice. I forget the exact title of the fish dish we had (should have written it down at the time) - but it was superb and so were the veggies.
In fact, this was one of the best meals I've eaten in a long time! Having just returned from Oz and NZ and eating very nicely there too, I'm rating this meal ahead of any I ate there! As for the price - it worked out at around 300rupees per head, including the tax and tip. Not as expensive as first anticipated, very filling and superb cooking.
