Average
And when I say 'good', i mean just that. Good! Not average..not great!
My colleague had told me a couple of months back that Zen is a very expensive restaurant with excellent chinese food! So, I decided to try out the place to celebrate my wife's pay hike :p
sigh! My colleague was definitely right on the cost front. I wish he was correct on the food part too!
The ambience was good, although the tables were placed way too closely for my comfort. The waiters were not all that courteous ... politeness is something which I have begun to expect out of top restaurant waiters. The waiters in Zen bang the plates down on your table with an audible sound..once is a mistake ..again and again can only be an unattractive habit..or worse still, a bad attitude!
Coming to the food..we are vegetarians and tried the lemon coriander soup and vegetable manchurian for starters. We ordered egg fried rice with zen special vegetables for the main course.
The food comes in good portions and is presented well in pleasing china. But I am afraid I have to say I have eaten better chinese food. I have been to Mainland china and Bamboo shoots in Bangalore which serve excellent chinese food. Zen does a decent fare but not something that I would look forward to going back to again and again.
To cap it all, the waiter serving us actually asked for a tip explicitly. After charging 10% service charge!
You may wonder why I gave a rating of 'average' after saying that the food is good. Well, bad service took some points away. Also, when we were given our table, there were a few crumbs of food left lying there by the previous guests which the not so adept waiters missed to clean out.
For those who are planning to go eat at this restaurant, do go by all means! the restaurant is recommended. But dont go there with too many expectations.

Good
Well having a full fledged website indicating the full standardised menu with prices was enough to entice my wife who was cribbing about finding authentic chinese in and around rajouri garden.
We did try couple of places in Rajouri including self style Yo! (which calls itself Indianised Chinese) and my wife absolutely hated the plasticised Chinese there. For my defense, I still love their chilly chicken (made in punjabi ishtyle).
When a journalist friend of mine told me about Berco's, I thought it is another place that serves drinks and serves some chinese dummies (call them dimsums if you want). But it was a surprise from start to end.
Located in the center of the District Center in Janakpuri it is an easy find. And the waiting time on a Friday evening was not much - not that it was not full; It was quite happening. But the crowd seemed unipolar with huge punjabi groups and few couples relegated to the side tables.
There are couple of TV's high mounted playing the IPL matches. After a brief wait, the guard who acts as your guide, we were guided to a corner table with neat decor and functional aides (napkins and forks). Cool water first came with a cleanly dressed attendent. Then we were served the menu (both food and drink) with a nice smile.
Warming up to the meal, we ordered couple of fruit beers (we still belong to the world of no meat and no alcohol) and ordered the famous momo's from berco's. And i ordered a egg splashed sweetcorn while my wife ordered a hot&sour.
There was a big table served of which only half the seats were occupied by a punjabi family and seem to be anticipating another family. And yes, before the soup came the other half of the party came. And the way the restaurant handled such a boisterous crowd without annoying any other guests was fantastic. And we got to know the reason for such a large gathering. They want to get into a wedding. The guy was smiling and we had some trouble finding the simple girl in the other party. Well yes, you guessed it. We had enough time to kill before the order came. It was quite a wait.
But it was all worth it. The schezwan stirred momos were really apetizing and the soup was all worth coming to the restaurant for my wife. She was more loving to me for the rest of the evening.
We then cleaned the tables and called for the menu. The orders served were in good quantity and we were 75% full at that time. May be summer decreases your apetite a lot - yours truly was also not so inclined. But the menu was not letting us go. We ordered some veg fried rice and a vegetable dish cooked in a zesty lemon sauce and it didnt disappoint. Thought our tummies and tongues were satisfied, we were attracted to the noodles being served to another table but restrained ourselves for a second visit.
The death by chocolate is supposed to be really great but we didnt have the stomach that day.
Eager to return to the Bercos, we came out 500 bucks lighter.
If a group goes (which seems to be order of that day) it might cost around 200 per person and there are special packages for executive lunches for which its ambience is great.
I totally recommend this place for an authentic chinese meal (without the chinese names) in around Janakpuri and Rajouri.

Good
well the sasri-akaal is welcoming. and then you will enter a dungeon - well it is artistically made up (if this is 2000 BC)!
the family floor is the ground floor where me and my wife were guided to. Though i have a feeling that since we weren't quite hep (it was 10pm when we reached there and we were quite grumpy ourselves).
First the menu card - it was a wooden piece on which the menu was pasted. Well, since it was handed over many generations, it was quite dirty to make us wash our hands after ordering :)
The menu is small but neatly arranged into veg and non veg sections and really had all that you need for a good punjabi meal. We ordered shorba (there was sweetcorn and tomato soups as options - not the usual punjabi dal shorba) first and chilly paneer to go with as a starter.
The shorba /soup arrived in two big coffee mugs piping hot. My sweetcorn soup made me wonder if this is a soup or a loose broth. since it was a cup, the sweetcorn stuck to the bottom and the vinegar to the top. Though the taste was ok, dear, the shorba is not an option for vegans.
The chilly paneer never arrived as the waiter just forgot about it. We were moved directly into the main dish - The Gatta Curry. Well this was a delightful dish if it was given with some generosity more than that of a gurudwara. Barely enough for two (they charged over 100) it tasted almighty good wanting for more. The roti (tandoori and romali) were excellent too. The setting of the kitchen very near the tables made it exciting to look at and they took care that no heat reaches the interiors of the restaurant seating. The dessert - Rice Kheer is highly recommendable if you dont mind a tasty small quantity for 35.
I would go there if i want to eat lazzatdhar khana without minding the cramped cave space. But bigger groups might enjoy more as its food is fantastic! It costs 400 for a couple vegetarian and 500 for a NV meal for two. drinks are extra.

Good
it is a pure paradise of paranthas with fantastic varieites of paranthas. it is a replica of an old delhi road side parantha gali with taste intact from there.
you are not allowed to use a fork or a knife on these yummy paranthas. just as your wallet is getting lighter (500 for a couple) you gain equivalent weight in paranthas. Try chef suggested paranthas and you will thank me.
the menu is really innovative and keeps you busy while they execute your order in good time. their meal options are great if you are looking for lunch items or even for catering.
book your table as you might be left standing outside for quarter of an hour!

Excellent
the title tells all. bikanervala doesnt compromise on anything in this branch. great snacks every corner.
bengali sweets, hots, sandwiches, jalebi, kachoris, malpua, etc are out of the world. their inhouse resaurant serves tasteful combinations of chinese, southindian and northindian food which is a good addition to the downstairs snacking place.
all in all a one stop shop to your snacking needs. please make sure your belt is loosened to take up the extra serving of calories all the way!
